mHealth guide to the 2015 Mobile World Congress

Mobile World Congress Website

A website update has made little difference, if you’re joining us in Barcelona you’ll find the GSMA’s annual Mobile World Congress is once again next to useless for any delegates wanting to track down mHealth innovations and follow the mHealth conference content:

Screen Shot 2015-02-03 at 12.24.34

For a background on mHealth developments at Mobile World Congress check out my guides from 201420132012 and our mHealth Insight reviews from 2008200920102011 and 2014).

Despite the very small attendance at last years two day “Health & Wellness” meeting stream the European Connected Health Alliance (formerly the EU mHealth Alliance) will once again be hosting this side show of mHealth seminars. Last year these were held in Montjuic – a location that was 30 minutes away from the main Mobile World Congress event – and this year things are even more confusing as the 2 day meeting is set to be held across two different locations (Tues 3 March at the Mobile World Centre which is at Career de Fontanella, 2, 08002 and Wed 4 March in Hall 8.0 of the Fira Gran Via).

Map of BCN showing the different venues over which the MWC 2015 mHealth seminars will be held

With 70,000 delegates attending the traffic in Barcelona is horrendous so you’re probably going to be looking at each way trip times similar to those last year of at least 30 mins which is a real pain.

ECHAlliance health and wellness at MWC2015

Perhaps it’s the date clash with the mHealth Summit being held during HIMSS’s UK eHealth Week in London but I think it’s more likely the shift in focus away from mobile operators (the GSMA is a MNO member organisation) who we increasingly look to as mere pipes to satisfy our boundless appetite for mobile data towards Smartphone brands (like Apple & Samsung) and app stores (Apple & Google) that explains the lack of takers for the expensive sponsorship packages (eg. the two €50,000+VAT Platinum sponsor opportunities are priced similarly to packages available for the mHealth Summit that draws in 4,000+ delegates including the CEO’s and key decision makers at all the key mobile giants like Apple, QComm, MNOs and Samsung).

Sponsorship sales are positive too as even without Samsung’s revisit (click here to watch the mHealth keynote from Samsung Mobile President & CSO Young Sohn last year) and an expected audience of as little as 50 paying delegates* (like we saw in 2014) the organisers have managed to get the debt laden Telefónica & VVT to take up €23k (+VAT) Gold Sponsorship packages, the Active and Assistive Living (AAL) programme, Globo and Inspire (Catalonia’s Quality and Health Assessment Agency) have taken €9k Silver Sponsorships leaving Roche (their Emminens Healthcare Services company) and Marand with the smaller Bronze ‘Tailored Sponsorship’ Packages.

* UPDATE 6 Feb 2015: I’ve been contacted by Brian O’Connor (Chair of the European Connected Health Alliance) and told that although while there are currently very few Participants registered on the event websites networking portal this isn’t a fair representation of the number of delegate tickets that have actually been sold. According to Brian there’s been a big jump in delegate numbers over last years meeting but this isn’t represented in the data I saw because many of the delegates simply haven’t yet completed their information.

* UPDATE 12 Feb 2015: The ECHAlliance Matchmaking meetings at the 2015 event aren’t taking place so there isn’t a networking area for delegates who are registered. You can of course always avail of the mHealth networking within the mHealth group on LinkedIn.

The following guide includes a comprehensive diary of the mHealth presentations followed by a hall by hall guide to exhibitors who you can find showcasing mHealth apps, devices and services and a networking event listing. If you know of anything that I’ve missed please add it in the comments below and I’ll update the post. I hope you find it a helpful guide and that we get a chance to meet on my fleeting visit to Barcelona!

Title: Wearables
Location: CETHall 4 Auditorium 4
Time: 14.00-15:30
Speakers:
Brent Blum, Wearable Technology Practice Lead, Accenture
Gareth Jones, VP & GM EMEA, Fitbit Inc
Ariel Garten, CEO, InteraXon

Joan Ng, SVP Product Marketing Jewellery Asia Pacific, Swarovski
Stephen Shurrock, Director Innovation & Digital Disruption, Telefónica

Details: The burgeoning wearables market is exploding with shipments forecast to grow from 22 million in 2014 to 135 million in 2018 (CCS Insight). Fitness trackers are the fastest-growing category but the scope of the market is almost unlimited. For example, implantable sensors may herald a new era for healthcare, yielding truly life-changing outcomes. Workplace wearables are also attracting attention, whether for airline security or enabling warehouse workers to access information while keeping their hands free. Yet however undeniably exciting the prospects are for wearables, barriers to adoption persist and not everybody is convinced of their mass-market appeal or real utility. Should wearables for men look the same as those for women? How ruggedized do they need to be? Is the smartwatch a smartphone killer? And can the launch of the Apple iWatch galvanise the wearables market to go mainstream?

Wearable technology looks poised to play a key role in the future of this market. Yet concerns relating to reimbursement models, the regulatory environment, standards and data security need to be allayed if mobile health is to fulfil its potential. Meanwhile, for the Education sector, mobile offers an invaluable opportunity to promote effective new ways of teaching and learning, enabling access to up to date course materials anytime, anywhere. This important session will showcase some of the world’s leading mobile healthcare and education initiatives, with clear takeaways for all stakeholders.

Vital-Energy, founded in 2009, is specialized in unique health products. Our flagship is the trademark WAVEEX, a mobile technology enhancement chip. WAVEEX makes the mobile raditation easier for our bodies to tolerate. The legally defined specific absorption rate (SAR) only protects our bodies against the influence of high-(radio-)frequency radiation. By positively changing the low-frequency magnetic fields WAVEEX expands the protection to a biological level. It levels out the peaks of magnetic fields, prevents changes in one`s blood profile and lowers the body`s stress levels. WAVEEX is indispensable for all mobile phone users!

  1. David – thanks for sifting through the programme. Very useful. Like you say, GSMA has not attempted to make it easy for those interested in Connected Health / eHealth.

    1. Hi Diarmuid,

No problem at all, I have to do it for a client I’m writing a report for anyway so it’s just as easy to share it here on the blog and I might get some contributions/tip offs from readers for things I would’ve missed otherwise.

It’s don’t think it’s intentional it’s just the mHealth opportunity is so far outside the GSMA’s comfort zone eg. look how slowly even the basic MNO mHealth opportunities are being adopted and in the latest Verizon (Mobile Operator) sponsored mHealth infographic they’ve so little understanding of the networks important contribution to mHealth that they’re using a mHealth definition that specifically excludes the network!

The GSMA’s loss anyway, these events aren’t even financially viable for them as anyone interested in doing business is focused on the much bigger and better produced mHealth Summit’s provided by HIMSS.

Let me know if S3Group has a #MWC15 booth, speaking slot, news etc that I can add to the above.
