Are Smartphones still too complicated for Mobile Operators?

I always think a big challenge Mobile Operators face as they try to move into the mHealth space is that a lot of them are out of their depth already.

On a visit to an eMobile flagship retail store this morning it struck me that if they’re uncertain of even the OS of the smartphones they’re selling what hope have they got with something more complicated or in helping customers who are trying to get their first smartphone?

Is it any real surprise that Apple is so confident that iPhone customers are ready to jump into a smartphone relationship that involves no mobile operator relationship whatsoever – I wonder if they’ll kick this off with the new iPad they’re announcing on Wednesday. I could imagine an embedded SIM iPad would go down nicely.
