Manfred Kube, M2M Business Development, Cinterion (a Gemalto company) presented an overview of the M2M mHealth opportunity highlighting the opportunity for embedded connectivity to enable care management and promote behavioural change.

After outlining the success of M2M solutions in other verticals, Manfred explained the opportunity to apply these as a blueprint for mHealth advances because technically there are similar underlying processes and system architectures required.


Manfred outlined the challenges faced by companies looking to add connectivity to medical devices and explained the importance that they consider security right from the start and look to specialists who have the “technology bricks” and proven track record to secure a solution.

Consulting partner

From conversations I have with medical device makers it’s very clear that the M2M potential can be very intimidating so it’s also a positive development to learn that Cinterion and Gemalto are increasingly positioning themselves as a consulting partner for these firms as they seek to navigate the various new opportunities.

Hands on with M2M mHealth devices

In the exhibition area Cinterion put on show some of the M2M solutions that they’ve worked to bring to market and it’s great to see devices such as the BioTronik Pacemaker/ICD automatice continuous monitoring devices that have made the company outright leaders in the home monitoring field – and helped the company to post substantial market share gains against the big 3.

mHealth is a subset of eHealth

While there’s no doubt that Cinterion brings indepth technical expertise to the mHealth market (the worlds #1 M2M enabler, the world’s smallest 3G mobile, etc) in the presentation Manfred presented mHealth as a subset of eHealth, which is something I disagree with.

Asides from the lack of a distinction made between “Healthcare” and “Healthcare Data”, I think this is a very natural misunderstanding to make and across history we’ve seen the same as the potential of every new media opens up to the industry participants. But just imagine I started telling you that TV was a subset of the cinema? Well of course at the time of it’s introduction it was considered to technically be a small cinema screen for the home at the time of introduction but as society got rid of the ingrained concepts of “show times” and entrepreneurs like Ted Turner saw the unique potential of TV and gave us 24 hour rolling news we soon realised that TV could deliver where the cinema had no opportunity to.

I think it won’t be long now until it becomes appreciated that mHealth has a much wider potential than eHealth but I think fundamental to an appreciation of this the technology community have to begin to realise that healthcare isn’t even paper based yet never mind digitalised. Less than 10% of healthcare is documented and it’s only the patient owned mobile device that has any hope of documenting this information and adding value to it.
